The Psychiatric Process
Important note: Patient confidentiality is strictly maintained at all stages in this process.
STEP ONE: THE DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW
A thorough history of the patient is taken, including any past medical history. The patients apprehensions and requirements are addressed – this is also the most crucial step to establish a basic rapport with the patient.
In this step, an additional psychological assessment may have to be conducted by a qualified clinical psychologist.
Following this, a treatment road map is chalked out in close collaboration with the patient.
STEP TWO: TREATMENT OPTIONS
1) Psychopharmacology
This approach employs a combination of time-tested medical protocols and medicines developed by cutting-edge research.
At each step, the patient is clearly made aware of all possible side effects to their treatment. Periodic monitoring is outlined from the outset itself. In the first few days, the client is also encouraged to have an open conversation through the day about their experience with the treatment plans.
2) Psychotherapy/ counseling
I also offer supportive psychotherapy to all my clients, and specialized Cognitive Behavior Therapy in certain cases. This covers psychotherapy for the family, expressed emotions, and caregiver therapy.

(I do not conduct other specialised forms of therapy such as Trauma Therapy, EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), DBT (Dialectical behavior therapy), etc. In these cases, the patient is typically referred to another doctor)
3) Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
ECTs or shock treatment is offered as a modality of treatment in suicidal and homicidal patients. It’s also offered as the safest mode of treatment for symptoms in pregnant women.
This process is conducted indoor in controlled, safe hospital environments in the presence of a qualified anaesthetist. A lot of myths surround this process, but extra precautions are taken to scientifically and transparently communicate the details of the procedure to the patient.
4) Expert second opinions
I offer expert second opinions on the treatment path or pharmacotherapy being offered to the patient. I am honest and open in my reviews and there is no compulsion from my side on any future steps.
